Lom Sak Hospital

Lom Sak hospital is a 150-bed community hospital located in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun. Situated 395 kilometers away from Bangkok, Lom Sak Hospital is the largest contracted unit for primary health care within Northern Phetchabun due to the large influx of patients referred from smaller hopistals in Lom Sak, and the nearby area. As of date, Lom Sak Hospital has provided medical services for over 250,000 people in northern Phetchabun.

Diabetic Eye Screening

With a growing number of diabetic patients. Normally the diabetic patients need to be offered diabetic eye screening test once a year as a preventive measure against any eye complication caused by diabetes, such as cataract, glaucoma, and et cetera.

However, many diabetic patients in Lom Sak hospital are not diagnosed due to the number of available equipment. While patients from sub-district hospitals nearby are sent to Lom Sak hospital after they experienced eye problems, some are diagnosed only after their conditions have worsened beyond treatment.

Instead of waiting for patients to be sent to Lom Sak hospital, Lom Sak hospital has come up with an outreach program to increase the accessibility of the diabetic eye screening test.

Every Thursday, Lom Sak hospital will send team of doctors and attending staffs, along with Fundus cameras, to one of the 32 sub-district hospitals nearby so that the patients can easily get the eye screening test.

Over 159 new diabetic patients with eye problems include Diabetic retinopathy 49 cases, Cataract 76 cases, and Glaucoma 34 cases have been found.

In only two months after the program was implemented, over 159 new diabetic patients with eye problems include Diabetic retinopathy 49 cases, Cataract 76 cases, and Glaucoma 34 cases have been found. However, by doing so, tests and operations related to the use of Fundus camera in Lom Sak hospital itself has come to a halt due to the lack of equipment.

This indicates an ongoing need for advanced eye examination equipment, which could be used for both patients in Lom Sak hospital, and those in the recipient hospitals of the outreach program conducted by Lom Sak hospital. As the outreach program aims to increase the accessibility of the diabetic eye examinations on a provincial level, early detection of any eye conditions will be treated in a timely manner, and greatly reduce the risk of permanent vision loss of many.
